Headwaters Los Altos Girls Camp Weekend
April 4, 2020 @ 9:00AM — April 6, 2020 @ 4:00PM Eastern Time (US & Canada)
This weekend-long mini-camp is designed to inspire girls in grades 8-12 through science learning.
This weekend-long mini camp will teach young female scientists to use the Student Driven Research methods designed by Headwaters Science Institute.
Student Driven Research is a framework designed to help students learn science skills and content through conducting their own original research. This framework is designed to supplement high school biology and environmental studies course materials through focusing around either biodiversity, nutrient cycling, or wetland chemistry and ecosystem services.
Focal Questions: How does the availability of resources affect populations around Los Altos? How do humans impact the environment around Los Altos?
General Camp outline:
Day 1: Introduction, question asking, and project design
Students will arrive having read pre-program reading. On day 1, students will meet at 9 a.m., set up camp, brainstorm research, and start collecting preliminary data.
Day 2: Data collection and analysis
On day 2, students will collect data and begin graphing their findings, as well as spend some recreational time together in the evening.
Day 3: Finish presentation building and present findings.
On day 3, students will finish their analysis and presentations, and present to a small audience. This is a great experience that mimics the academic presentations real-world scientists complete when earning an advanced degree.
